The next Blazer EV? (TIOT Iss.8)

Over the weekend, GM unveiled its newest concept vehicle, the Hummer X, aiming to capture attention with a smaller, modular take on the current Hummer EV’s design language. At first glance, the family resemblance is undeniable—both vehicles share a similar grille and boxy silhouette—but after learning more about the Hummer X, it’s clear that this is where the similarities end.

During the presentation, GM representatives emphasized the Hummer X’s fully modular platform, touting its future-proofing potential through upgrades and component swaps. Which could be true but when a buyer is willing to spend over $100,000 on a luxury truck they also tend to prefer trading in for the latest model rather than upgrading the one they already have.

The smaller footprint of this vehicle is also significant. The Hummer X is a full eight inches shorter than the current Hummer EV, putting it in the same footprint as the Ford Bronco. Which raises the question: why wear the Hummer badge at all? A vehicle of this size and market positioning could have been far better received as a Chevy Blazer concept—ideally one aimed at a more affordable price point. With the Ford Bronco steadily closing in on Jeep Wrangler sales year after year, and the Wrangler 4xe discontinued just last year, GM had a golden opportunity to reintroduce a true off-road-ready Blazer to replace the current crossover variant that is almost identical to the current Equinox EV.

If the Hummer X remains purely a concept that never sees production, perhaps it’s because GM realizes the Hummer badge isn’t the right fit here. There’s hope that a production-ready modular Blazer EV could emerge, one that fills the gap Jeep and Ford currently ignore. Otherwise, GM risks another missed opportunity—especially if vehicles like the upcoming Jeep Recon manage to sell out quickly.

Enthusiasts can only hope GM pivots before this idea fades away. The market is ready. Will GM be?
